Hospitality Food and Beverage Managers are key to properties that serve food and drinks of all types which includes as restaurants, fast food chains, and hotels. They make sure customers get products that meet or exceed their expectations as well as the industry’s safety standards. An F&B Manager forecasts, plans and controls the ordering of food and beverages (drinks) for a hospitality property. He also manages the finances related to the whole process of purchasing food and drink for the hotel premises. “Purchasing” includes sourcing, ordering and transporting of F&B.
F&B Managers are often responsible for recruiting, hiring, training, evaluating and terminating F&B staff. For this they need to have strong leadership and problem-solving skills. In this area training, discipline and general administration are needed to make sure the team runs effectively to keep the customer happy.
As always in the hospitality industry – excellent customer service is key. Great service sets the atmosphere of a restaurant, and it makes guests want to come back time and again. Food and Beverage Managers are responsible for making sure that customers needs are addressed and attended to and that the service is always of a high standard, and thus would need to deal with any issues that might come up during daily service operations
COMPLY WITH FOOD SAFETY STANDARDS
Food safety and hygiene is of utmost importance when serving food. F&B Managers must be knowledgeable of the food safety standards that apply to their venues, the latest research in this area and make sure that their team is educated about them as well.
As with any field, someone who excels in their job keeps on top of trends and this is no different in this position. By keeping up with food trends and knowing what appeals to the customers, an F&B Manager is able to contribute to the design and update of menus for restaurants. For example – many customers are aware of and looking for Gluten Free options. An F&B Manager will be aware of this and will plan for it accordingly.
While it is possible to gain a position as a food and beverage manager through years of on-the-job training and experience-building, many employers prefer to hire people with qualifications.
